How to Order at a Chinese Street Food Stall

Point out the food, confirm portions and price, explain changes, and show a simple Chinese order even without a menu.

Ordering in China

First, watch how the stall works

At a stall with no written menu, look at the display and point to one item. Ask what it is before the vendor starts cooking. A familiar shape may hide a filling or sauce you do not recognize.

Agree on one portion

A price may be for a skewer, a piece, a portion or a weight. Point to the item and ask the price for one portion; have the vendor show how much that includes. A number on a sign does not settle the unit or the final amount.

Keep the first order simple

Order one portion, then add more if you want it. If you need a change, ask before cooking: a filled dumpling or mixed sauce may already be prepared. Watch where customers collect their food, and confirm payment with the vendor.

Preferences and allergies need different conversations

A request for less chili is about taste. For an allergy, explain the allergen and ask about ingredients, shared oil and utensils. A busy stall may not be able to check or change its preparation. These peanut questions can help start that conversation.

The four phrases below cover identifying, pricing, ordering and takeaway. You can simply show the Chinese to the vendor; you do not need to pronounce it perfectly.
