What to Order at a Chinese Restaurant for Two

Build a balanced shared meal for two, check portion sizes and adjust your order to the menu and your preferences.

Ordering in China

Begin with a small order you can adjust

For two people, one main, one vegetable and rice or another staple can be a starting point. This is a planning suggestion, not a serving rule. Appetite, portions and meal style vary; ask staff and add food if needed.

Choose a contrast

With a rich main, ask about a lighter vegetable preparation. With a large noodle bowl, check whether extra rice is useful. If mapo tofu (mápó dòufu, 麻婆豆腐) catches your eye, confirm the minced meat and heat before ordering it.

Check the portions before committing

Ask about small servings and whether rice is ordered separately. For a whole fish or bird, confirm its size and price. Keep the restaurant's confirmed amount as the price rather than estimating a bill from a generic guide.

Make individual needs clear

Tell staff which requests apply to one person and which to the whole table. Shared dishes and serving utensils matter for allergies. Ask about separate preparation when needs differ, rather than assuming every dish can be adapted.
