Look beyond the name
Toppings and broth vary. Peanuts and tofu skin are common examples, but the name cannot tell you every ingredient. A noodle bowl with few visible animal pieces is not evidence of a vegetarian broth.
Start with your preferred heat
Ask whether chili oil can be left out before preparation; a broth or sauce already made may still be spicy. If you have an allergy, explain it and check broth, toppings and shared equipment as a whole. Removing one topping is not a complete ingredient check.
A few words to show or say
Show the Chinese to staff, or use the Pinyin as a pronunciation guide.
Ask before preparation; check whether the broth itself is already spicy.
可以不放辣椒油吗?
Can you leave out the chili oil?
Ask about the bowl you will receive, and separately explain any allergy.
配料里有花生吗?
Are there peanuts among the toppings?
